Camping

The 2,500-acre coastal nature preserve hosts a variety of camping opportunities. You can choose from 173 RV sites, six tent-only sites, and three shelters. Campsite fees vary depending on the season and availability.

In addition to its pristine beach and national historic landmark (Atalaya Castle), Huntington Beach State Park features an excellent swimming lagoon, nature trails, and an interesting wildlife viewing area. Its freshwater lakes and marshes also provide fishing opportunities.

Located midway between Myrtle Beach and Charleston, the park is an easy day trip from either city. However, its large white sandy beach and pristine and uncrowded campgrounds make it an ideal overnight destination. The park is a great location for a family vacation or romantic getaway. Just remember to bring your sunscreen and plenty of water!

Beach

Huntington Beach State Park offers a rare opportunity to escape the crowds of the Grand Strand and enjoy an unspoiled section of virtually perfect Atlantic beach. It also has a variety of other facilities that make it a unique destination.

Beach-goers can swim, sunbathe, and walk on a three-mile stretch of pristine sand. There are also picnic facilities available, and a variety of recreational activities can be enjoyed such as sea-breeze camping, surf fishing, hiking trails, and exploring the freshwater lagoon.

The park’s many nature programs will appeal to birders, and the opportunity to get up close and personal with loggerhead turtles during their nesting season is sure to thrill animal lovers. The park is also home to the national historic landmark Atalaya, the winter residence of Archer and Anna Hyatt Huntington, philanthropists and sculptors. Visit another area in town here.

Hiking Trails

Huntington Beach State Park is one of the most diverse state parks in the region. Its 2,500 acres include miles of pristine beaches, salt marsh creeks and inlets, and wooded areas that provide habitat for both migrating and permanent bird species.

During the winter, the park is a hotspot for migratory birds, while year-round visitors can enjoy herons and other shorebirds. The Sandpiper Nature Trail is an easy 2-mile out-and-back trail that runs parallel to one of South Carolina’s best-preserved beaches. It passes over a boardwalk over spartina grass and black pluff mud, through a coastal forest of oaks, red cedars, and creeping vines, and ends at a saltwater pond where birding is abundant from observation towers.

A paved bike trail that is part of the East Coast Greenway, surf fishing along the beach and salt marsh creeks and the historic Atalaya castle are just some of the other popular attractions found at the state park.

Fishing

The park’s pier is a popular destination for fishermen of all skill levels, thanks to its wide variety of fish species and great facilities. Just make sure you adhere to fishing regulations and bring the proper gear.

Murrells Inlet’s jetties and shallow creeks are excellent spots for inshore fishing, offering a chance to land Red Drum, Sharks, Flounder, and more. And when you head further offshore, you’ll be able to find reefs and wrecks rich with food fish.

Huntington Beach State Park is also home to a nature center, a 1930s Moorish castle, Atalaya, and numerous wild birding areas. Its pristine, rarely-crowded beaches and wetlands are also home to sea turtles and alligators. The park features hiking trails like the Sandpiper Pond Trail and the Kerrigan Nature Trail, along with boardwalks that extend into the salt marsh and freshwater lagoon for exceptional wildlife viewing.
